1.3.85 first impressions

1) filesystem I/O performance SCREAMS. 128 MB sequential write +
fsync (on 32 MB RAM) now runs at 5.9 MB/sec vs. 5.7 in 1.3.83. Read
performance is now 6.1 vs. 5.4. What's more, the CPU time is now
about 4 seconds (vs. 7 before). Looks to me like a copy has been
eliminated.

2) PPP performance is down. Yup, you read me right. Connected at
28.8, I'm now getting about 9 KB/sec (vs. 10) for a perfectly
compressible file, and 2.4 (vs. 3.0) for a .gz file. This is to a
Solaris 2.3 host. Linus, you tired of us screwing with your head or
something?
