nlist() equivalent?

hi - i'm currently trying to port some apps from SunOS to linux, and need
to know what the equivalent of nlist() in SunOS is in linux. according
to the man page, nlist() is:

nlist examines the name list in the given executable output file and
selectively extracts a list of values.

if anyone knows of the linux equivalent, i'd really appreciate it. i
know there's an nlist.h, but all it has in it is the nlist struct. there
aren't any functions to actually examine the name list in an executable.
thanks!
