You've got to re-run the configure program in the drivers/sound directory.
(and don't answer yes to the copy from /etc/sound.conf or whatever it is,
you've got to completely regenerate the config file)
I wrestled with this last Saturday after patching from 2.0.0 to 2.0.3 and
compiling sound as a module.
Once I did a make configure in the drivers/sound directory, all was well.
Anyone having problems with sound after upgrading from 2.0.0 must do this.
(of course rebuilding the kernel from scratch after a make config and
redoing the sound config would work, too).
