update causes disk to access every 30 seconds (2.0.21)

If an update daemon is present, it will do something that turns the hard
drive on in my laptop every 30 seconds. I have played with some
parameters trying to change this time, but without success.

If no writes to buffers have taken place, is there any reason for update
to have to access the disk? I could save lots of battery power if it
would do whatever it is less often, or not at all after flushing all the
dirty buffers.

It is not the -5 or -f parameter, I haven't checked further.
