What linux release do you run?
I've tried the following commands with linux 2.0.14 and df 3.9
(a.out):

mkdir /tmp/outch
cd /tmp/outch
rmdir /tmp/outch
df
df .
df /tmp/outch

... they all worked fine here and give an error message where suitable.
IMHO this is is not a kernel issue!?
