It is expected to start replacing IPv4 (the current IP protocol) in
the medium term. When the 2.1 development cicle finishes you will
probably have many LANs and some backbones where the two protocols
are used. We can't have a production IPv6 by then if we don't work
and test with experimental code during the development phase.

First thing the "average user" needs if global connectivity. IPv6 will give
you that in the future, it is believed.
