Redirection of console output

I would like to capture the output from printk's in the kernel. How do
I redirect it to a file or an xterm? I tried to link the console to a
pty that was an xterm, but this was a complete failure! any ideas/help
is greatly appreciated...(i hope this is an appropriate forum for this q)
