Modules in 2.1.11

Is it just me or are modules totally knackered from 2.1.8 onwards.
I get strange messages. For example, modprobe sound produces:
init_module: Bad font file value.
VFAT, lp and most other modules also fall over with weird and wonderful
error messages.
I have the latest versions of modules, libc, gcc and binutils.
Unfortunately my subscription to the kernel list got lost again, so I
may be out of date.
