ldconfig won't update libraries

Help,

I upgraded my system from 2.0.0 to 2.0.24 and it seems to be running fine.

However, when I upgraded to XFree86 3.2 a day later, I got the following
error when I attempted to use ldconfig to update to the new libraries:

# /sbin/ldconfig
/sbin/ldconfig: warning: can't unlink /usr/X11R6/lib/ (Operation not permitted)
/sbin/ldconfig: warning: can't unlink /usr/i486-linux/lib/ (Operation not
permitted)
/sbin/ldconfig: version 1.7.3
#

X applications then complain about:

$ xterm
xterm: can't load library 'libXmu.so.6'
&

If I "export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/X11R6/lib", everything seems to work (except
for some keyboard extension errors I am chasing...).

Thanks in advance,

Rick
