Eth0 link down warnings block machine

I've encountered some problems booting kernels when the ethernet
link is not connected and linux detects this. It sometimes spews
unless messages about 'eth0 link down'. This renders the machine
useless. It happened when I had irq conflicts/wrong settings, but
also when i just had unplugged my cable from the net. I've had it
happen with 100vg and other cards (a DE4x4 in a multia).
How about a maximum of, say, one announce per minute ? :)
