Sudden strangeness in 2.1.3

Yesterday a real strange thing happend with 2.1.13
I was running ppp and using Netscape and for some reason the sys load
jumped up to around 1 and the whole system started to crawl. I checked
the /var/log/messages and there was no strange processes list at the time
the load happend. It was so bad that I couldn't even switch to a virtual
console, the keyboard was not recognized without a massive time delay. I
finally swaped to another console and was able to log in as root and
check all processes as well as use top and nothing unusual was shown.

It was really strange. I haven't run 2.1.13 again yet to see if I could
reproduce the strangeness, but I suspect that it was some strange sort of
fluke as I haven't had any other problems with 2.1.13. Any ideas?
