Reminder - you only need to probe once _ever_ and even probing
can be eliminated. Once a working configuration has been
established, with or without user intervention, it can be
used again.

A user space configuration manager could read stored values
from the kernel image, or from a file on the root device.
This of would't work iwell for booting from a net connection,
but it is still a possibility.
