Problem with building Modules 2.1.13

While trying to build modules 2.1.13, I got the following error:
g++: Command not found

Before you jump to conclusions, I _know_ I do not have C++ installed. The
main reason is that most if the non-{Perl,awk,sed} programming I do is in
C, and I don't usually have a lot of disk space to spare to install things
I don't use.

My question is this: When did C++ become a requirement in order to build
a kernel? (And it is a requirement now, if you want to build a modular
kernel successfully.)

Meanwhile, I'm off to figure out which rpm's to collect to install C++...
