I, too, am running 2.0.24 (on a severly updated/upgraded slackware 3.0)
with apache 1.1.1, and while I can't claim 40,000 hits a day, I do average
roughly 6,000 to 10,000 hits with about 20 or so virtual hosts for the web
server, as well as running dns, sendmail (processing about 1,000+ messages
a day), pop clients logging in, etc. on a p100 w/48 megs RAM. So far there
hasn't been any problem with apache that i've seen. Perhaps it is a
combination of hardware/modules/drivers/kernel causing problems.
