Bad CDROM hangs the system ?

I just found a bad CDROM. When i try to copy some files from that CD
from Linux (2.0.27) the system becomes unuseable, ctrlaltdel doesnt
work, i can't login or issue commands. And my syslog with the following
messages :

(oh, plain dos just says Retry, Ignore... :(
