i had the same prollems with pppd wrt the netmask.. EXCEPT that my problem
was that the ppp links netmask was 255.255.255.255 regardless of whether i
specified a netmask or not.. and worse, i got that `pppd forgot to specify
netmask'.. the result, of course, is that i can't connect to anywhere..
