smbfs problems with 2.1.16 and 2.1.17

I'm having problems with smbfs and 'shares', the share mounts ok but then
vanishes after a short while with the following errors.

Dec 23 10:07:39 njb kernel: smb_proc_readdir_long: Looping in FIND_NEXT??
Dec 23 10:09:52 njb kernel: smb_statfs: dskattr error = 5

I'm not sure when this problem first appeared but its in 16 and 17
