message log file unwritten and/or not readable

HELP!

I am having a bit of a headache with my syslog (/var/log/messages -or-
/usr/adm/messages) file which was first was unreadable, and now is not
even writing.

The kernel I am running is 2.0.21 (see .config file below)

What I mean by unreadable was that execution of 'more' gave white space
on the output of the log files and 'less' filled the screen with
video-inverted amperstands with adjacent carrots "@^@^@^@^@^@^ ...."
across the screen.

After moving /var/log/messages --> /var/log/old.messages no further
messages were written to /var/log/messages.

Files that are apparently being updated however are:

cron
wtmp
lastlog

These of course are unreadable also.

The machine that this is happening on is a 486 SX compiled as a firewall
machine and diskspace _was_ really at a premium (The disk is only a
100MB HDD) until I archived the /usr/src/linux directory. See the kernel
.config file below attached.

I of course need to read this file to debug the ppp daemon and chat
scripts.

I added the following lines to the /etc/syslog.conf file as the ppp
README.linux suggests but still no luck:

daemon.* /dev/console
daemon.* /usr/adm/ppplog

Any thoughts/suggestions would be greatly welcomed at this point.
