Kernel 2.1.17 won't compile! :-(

Well, I figured I *must* be on the cutting edge of Linux development,
since I like working with it so much.

I went out and downloaded the 2.1.17 kernel, upgraded (I think),
everything to where it shoulkd be.. GCC, LD.SO, Make, etc., and I tried
to compile the kernel.

I know you guys have much better things to talk about here, like GGI
(which seems pretty interesting), and other neat stuff, (on a side note,
I was pleasantly surprised to find that my upgrade from 1.2.13 to 2.0.27
was actually an UPGRADE -- things went along FASTER and better than
before, with the same hardware. I suppose I must unlearn what I have
learned from microsoft. At any rate, I digress..)

I'm at my wit's end with this problem. Anyone have any idea what I should
do?

It goes through the kernel compile flawlessly, until it hits the very
end. Watch:

gcc -D__KERNEL__ -I/usr/src/linux/include -Wall -Wstrict-prototypes -O2
-fomit-frame-pointer -fno-strength-reduce -pipe -m386 -DCPU=386 -c -o
signal.o signal.c
gcc -D__KERNEL__ -I/usr/src/linux/include -D__ASSEMBLY__ -traditional -c
entry.S -o entry.o
/tmp/cca07008.s: Assembler messages:
/tmp/cca07008.s:593: Error: Unknown pseudo-op: `.rept'
/tmp/cca07008.s:595: Error: Unknown pseudo-op: `.endr'
make[1]: *** [entry.o] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/linux/arch/i386/kernel'
make: *** [linuxsubdirs] Error 2
edgy:/usr/src/linux#

Weird errors. I have no idea what to do with it. I know that if I
intend to run a "development" kernel, I should know enough to "develop"
it and fix it if I can't compile it. But, really, I'm pretty good. This
just stumps me. Shoot me if it's easy to fix. :-)

Anyone have any ideas? :)

Thanks. Oh, if you thought my post here was utterly useless, type yes at
your linux prompt. Good day. :-)
