sysvinit 2.69 problem?

Folks,

486 with 2x FD, 2x HD, Linux on logic partition of 2nd HD
linux 2.1.21
ld.so 1.7.14
gcc 2.7.2.1
binutils 2.7.0.3
libc 5.4.17
libc++ 27.2.1
ldd 1.8.5
modutils-970116

So far I should have all what I need. Except of some "warning: variable
may be used uninitialized" during compilations I had no trouble to set
the system up.

If I start up Linux with sysvinit 2.65f, I get through the boot-up with
nearly no harm, except of an error in the route netmask configuration
and a "SIOCADDRT: invalid argument" problem (any idea what that means?).

If I try to boot 2.1.21 with Lilo, and "init=/sbin/init.new" as
suggested in the sysvinit 2.69 documentation, I get a problem as
"can't creat lock file /etc/mtab~: Read-only file system".

This is followed by all kind of problems, as failures to load the
different daemons like at, inetd etc., and finally messages like
'Id "1" respawning too fast'.

Any idea how to fix this? I'll try modutiles 960118 today, but I think
it's rather in sysvinit.

Thank you,
Frank
