MMX + FPU mode?

A former CS professor of mine suggested that it might be interesting to
run a dual processor MMX system, keeping one processor always in FPU mode
and the other always in MMX mode. There would clearly be some overhead
in the OS determining which processes neeeded to run where, but I wonder
if that overhead could be less than the FSAVE/FRESTORE instructions?
So what do y'all think? Is this idea even feasible?
