many Tx request while active messages, why???

I am getting screens fulls of "eth0: Tx request while active" messages
from linux 2.0.28 slackware 3.1.

Is there something not configured right possible? any ideas is
appreciated.

After some time the linux finally dies and the machine must be rebooted.
