pppd broken in 2.1.27/28?

when i compiled 2.1.27 i noticed that when i connected via pppd, some
little things started happening in the interface config.... for example

ppp0 Link encap:Point-Point Protocol
inet addr: P-t-P: Mask:
RX packets:0 errors:2269 dropped:0 overruns:0
TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:3538 overruns:0

and on top of this in the routing table i would get this

Kernel IP routing table
Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric Ref Use Iface
spanky.europa.c * UH 0 0 0 ppp0
spanky.europa.c * U 0 0 0 ppp0
default spanky.europa.c UG 32767 0 6 ppp0

and on top of that the loopback device disappeared.. now when i change to
2.0.29 with the same compile options it all works, the loopback device
shows up again, and routing goes back to normal.... ohh, and last of all i
get this little message when running pppd on 2.1.28:

'kernel: pppd forgot to specify route netmask'

doesn't do this in 2.0.29......
