2.0.29-ISS bug?

This seems rather bizarre, but after applying the ISS#4 patches to an
almost stock 2.0.29 kernel (Cyrix patches also), the Sony cdu31a drivers
appear to be broken. Whether I compile it as a module or in the kernel,
my box completely locks up when it trys to mount the cdrom. I don't know
if it's related or not, but there were similar lockups without the cdu31a
patch in 2.1.x kernels as well.
The other informative stuff:
Cyrix P166+, 32M
latest binutils, modules, gcc, libc, etc.
If anyone's got any ideas what could be causing this I'd like to hear
it...
