*Ahem.* Last time I checked, Solaris doesn't use EXT2 filesystems. :) Try
UFS. Better yet, try mke2fs. :)

No, these wouldn't be the cause of your problem. The reason is that ext2fs
doesn't know how to deal with really corrupted or foreign filesystems, and
barfs.
