But the new kernels block in the fcntl() call because the server
doesn't implement network locking. Upgrading our NFS server is no
possibility (i'll be murded if the thing crashes because it's a
production machine). Is there any possibility to restore the old
NFS client behaviour, even it's a crude hack, for the time beeing?

mount -o no_lock
