ext2 filesystem error report

Hi

I got told that there are problems being reported with filesystem error
with the 2.0 kernel and asked to report my findings. Here is what I know
(please note that I am not on this list so if you want more information you
will have to CC replies to me).

Our main terminal server (P133 with 32 MB EDO RAM and 2 ISA Cyclom cards
and a 3GB IDE Fireball HD) is getting error messages. I am *not* out of
inodes or disk space as has been suggested on other lists (I can mail df
and df -i if you want).

About once every 3 days we are getting this error starting to appear in
/var/log/messages:

Apr 18 02:05:56 phoenix kernel: EXT2-fs error (device 03:04):
ext2_new_block: Free blocks count corrupted for block group 12

It repeats over and over until I shutdown into single user mode and
manually fsck the hard drive. The error is *always* on /dev/hda4 which is
a large partition:

phoenix(larry)> df
Filesystem 1024-blocks Used Available Capacity Mounted on
/dev/hda1 97556 19904 72614 22% /
/dev/hda3 1190046 540949 587609 48% /usr
/dev/hda4 1720341 805450 825986 49% /var

This is not a heavily loaded server and typically sites at a load average
of about .11, except maybe when a luser opens their 16 MB attachment in
pine :-(

I am running kernel 2.0.28 with e2fsprogs version 1.06. Since shuting down
my server every other day to fsck it doesn't make my customers very happy
and it was suggested that RAM or the IDE controller could be at fault we
swapped the HD into a different computer last night... time will tell if it
makes a difference.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
