My 2.1.35 x86 kernel now boots !

I downloaded the entire tgz, zapped the linux directory and
reinstalled. The resulting kernel booted fine using the same config
options. Is make mrproper is leaving something behind perhaps ? I had
no .rej's in my original tree.
A lot of modules (PPP,sg,ez,sound etc) still have the following
unresolved symbol:
__global_cli
__global_save_flags
__global_restore_flags
__global_sti
Is there a fix for this ? I am using modutils-2.1.34 and all the
latest binutils etc.
