To follow up on this, I tried the above, and still received the same
effect.. from /var/adm/messages:

Apr 19 01:19:24 aurania init: Switching to runlevel: 6
Apr 19 01:20:39 aurania syslogd 1.3-0#: restart.
Apr 19 01:20:39 aurania kernel: klogd 1.3-0, log source = /proc/kmsg started.
Apr 19 01:20:39 aurania kernel: Swansea University Computer Society NET3.039 for Linux 2.1
Apr 19 01:20:39 aurania kernel: NET3: Unix domain sockets 0.16 for Linux NET3.038.
Apr 19 01:20:39 aurania kernel: Swansea University Computer Society TCP/IP for NET3.037

but from /var/adm/syslog:

Apr 19 01:19:31 aurania syslogd: exiting on signal 15
Apr 19 01:20:39 aurania kernel: Error in symbol table input.
Apr 19 01:20:39 aurania kernel: Cannot find map file.

Any insights, anyone?
