The kernel version shouldn't effect LILO in the least, since LILO does its
job before the kernel starts his. Check wether /etc/lilo.conf has
boot=/dev/hda2 or boot=/dev/hda. (Assumes you boot from the second
partition on the first ide harddrive, season to taste.) If it says
/dev/hda2, then make shure /dev/hda2, and only /dev/hda2, is marked
bootable. If you also use OS/2, then some oddities may apply. In either
case, try useing the other one.
