Have you tried any of the AIC7XXX experimental patches?
ftp://ftp.pcnet.com/users/eischen/Linux
Daniel Eischen is doing a wonderful job.

The latest patch (Apr16) is supposed to be a big change - well I can't
get it to compile yet :-( but the pervious Feb12 patch works great.
The current shipping kernel code has a pretty bad kernel stack overflow
problem (thanks to the wonderous optimization techniques of GCC) that
are avoided by the patches. I'm sure there are other goodies tucked
into the patches too.

Also, tune in to:
aic7xxx@freebsd.org (subscribe by mailing majordomo@freebsd.org)
where all the development banter happens.

It really is a shame Adaptec won't cooperate with Linux developers.
My last mail to Robin Mizell <rmizell@corp.adaptec.com>, Manager of
the "Adaptec Compatibility Advantage Program" (ACAP), still hasn't
been answered. Once I wrote the word "Linux", I got an earfull of
silence :-( Robin orginally wrote _me_ to handle my complaints
that I addressed to a support rep.
