How to find what module requests mean?

How can I find what is causing a modprobe? I'm seeing requests for
binfmt-0000 appear pretty often, and I'd like to know where it's coming
from. (kernel version 2.1.35)

I get a whole slew of block-major-* "can't locate" messages too, but I
think that's the cdrom, which eventually finds one that works. I'm more
curious about the odd binfmt one though...
