The false impression given by the first few posts in this thread that
upgrading to the latest ld.so would make it impossible to run a.out
binaries is what made this discussion go berzerk.

People (like me) should probably have kept quiet until they'd looked at
the latest ld, and seen that there was no huge problem developing...but
I'm sure we all spoke too soon because we wanted to get our opinion out
before it was "too late."
