I started a sort of same thread.
In the toplevel Makefile i disabled the smp=1 line.
The load is still more than what it should be:

9:02am up 8 min, 1 user, load average: 2.10, 1.63, 0.81
31 processes: 28 sleeping, 3 running, 0 zombie, 0 stopped
CPU states: 86.2% user, 0.8% system, 86.2% nice, 13.0% idle
Mem: 63036K av, 8876K used, 54160K free, 7916K shrd, 676K buff
Swap: 36252K av, 0K used, 36252K free 4076K cached

USER PID %CPU %MEM NI VSZ RSS SHRD TT STAT TIME COMMAND
root 170 86.2 0.3 4 256 196 144 ? R N 7:35 desclient
dth 227 0.8 1.0 0 1380 660 468 p0 R 0:00 top

Only one process that is reniced so a load of 1.00 should be seen.

Bogomips and the des challenge client (keymaster.des.sollentuna.se)
now both work normal again due to the "#" in the makefile:

$ bogomips
Calibrating delay loop.. ok - 233.42 BogoMips
