I didn't read the previous messages in this thread very carefully, but saw
that somebody had the problem that the ftp session locks up when trying to
get a directory listing or trying to download something. This is exactly
the effect you get if you are behind a packet filtering firewall that only
accepts outgoing connections and you are not using passive mode FTP.
The problems could also be caused by a too small MTU. This would explain
why the short ftp commands work, but packets are dropped when starting the
data transfer. (I think I spotted the Don't Fragment (DF) flag in a
tcpdump listing posted here.)
