ld.so 1.8.10 problem

quick question, does the latest version of ld.so update
all of the symlinks pointing to the various librarys? I have been unable
to get ldconfig (run as root) to update the symlinks, i.e.

libxxx.so -> libxx.so.n.n.n

for instance, I've been unable to get ldconfig to alter the
libopcodes.so symlink to point to 2.8.0.3 from 2.7.0.2.

am I doing something wring, has the behavior of ldconfig with regards to
symlinks changed?
