2.1.38 well hung

I was cruising along in 2.1.38 when the following message appeared on
the console:

kernel: xmit_timer <= 0 - timer:2 when:ffe447c5

and the next thing I knew the machine was locked up solid, requiring
powerdown to recover.

When I restarted, everything went along until the normal init was just
about complete, then I got an Oops in process swapper and was hung
again. I repeated this latter scenario about three times before giving
up and going back to 2.1.37.
