Why is the minimum block size 1Kb??

Could someone please give me a good reason why:

a) Default block size is 1024 bytes unless the hardware uses a larger
sector size.
b) What will break if a 512 byte sector size is used.

The reason why I am pursuing this is that some people wish to use the
ZIP drive (100 Mb external drive via parallel port) to run linux, I
personally find that 100 Mb a bit limiting and that linux uses a
large amount of symlinks (which from my understanding uses a block to
hold the reference path).
