howto lock 2.1.40 without networking

To lock 2.1.40, i don't need netscape nor wait for one or two hours (which
works as well).

I simply
- log in
- start fvwm (starts xconsole, xterm, xman, xcalc, xclock, emacs, xsysinfo)
- start xxgdb from xterm (get no prompt)
- try to start another xterm;

I can now only switch between virtual consoles and move the pointer.
No login, no entry in emacs, just hardware reset.

Any chance to get usefull information out of this?
(Of course, with the same system and 2.0.27 i get uptimes > 1week).
