Guys,

To expand on yesterdays system lockup, here is the latest:
Hardware: HP Vectra 5/166, 40MB RAM, 32MB swap, 450MB ext2 partition, 60MB
free, RedHat 4.1, MetroX Xserver (not running).
Situation: I rebooted this morning, and had not run X at all this boot. I
was using the multiple virtual consoles and had one screen logged in as a
normal user running a continuious loop of reading from the HD. Another
screen also as a normal user was running a continuious loop of "vmstat 5
20". I had these running just to keep the load high even when I was not
doing much.
Result: As I was telnetted into another system, I got these error
messages:
[beginning]
hda: irq timeout: status=0x58 { DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest}
hda: DMA disabled
ide0: reset: success
hda: irq timeout: status=0xd0 { Busy }
ide0: reset timed-out, status=0xd0
hda: irq timeout: status=0xd0 { Busy }
end_request: I/O error, dev 03:33, sector 953992
hda: drive not ready for command
[end -- more similar error messages deleted.]

At this point I was still able to switch VCs and could interact with the
system I had telnetted into for about another 2-3 minutes. After a while,
all I could do was switch VCs and hit the Ctrl-Scroll Lock, Shift-Scroll
Lock, etc (those BTW looked normal, nothing extremely large, small, or
negative).

I don't think this is a hardware problem -- I am downgrading to 2.1.36
which worked on this hardware fine a few weeks ago. Anyone have things
they want to look at?

Dan
