More broken APM stuff [Re: APM power off fails]

Hi,

Recently (since around 2.1.39 or so, I think) I have had intermittent
problems starting X[1].

I had APM console blanking enabled, and after it had been activated, I
couldn't get X to start without something (X tickling kernel bug, or
vice-versa?) causing the screen to blank and the power light on my monitor
to flash, indicating that I should use lynx instead of netscrape. All
indications suggest that X thinks it has started correctly - two xterms,
fvwm (+ associated crap), etc... Ctrl-Atl-Backspace returns me to a
usable, if non-graphical, screen, though.

Rebooting the machine[2] doesn't fix the problem, but if I actually turn
the machine off (after shutting down, obviously) and leave it a few
seconds, everything is just dandy again.

The problem isn't 100% reproducible (about 50%, IIRC) but is slightly
distressing.

Anyone else seen it?

Cheers,
Matthew.

[1] XFree86 v3.2 - accelerated S3 ViRGE driver (haven't tried any others)
[2] Intel P120, 104Mb RAM (all but 8 are EDO), HX chipset, Award BIOS,
ISA NE2K, Diamond Stealth 3D 2000 (2Mb EDO) card, some other stuff
too.
