Kernel Panic, IDE reset and others...

I have posted this question on the newbie list and no one seems to have
any advice for me.

I am runing two linux boxen, one running Red Hat 1.2.13 (I know it old) on
a 486 which has an ethernet connection to the universities network.

Recently, during routine system checking, lots of zombie processes show
up. Then on reboot I see many IDE reset I/O error with references to LBA
addresses. I get dumped into a repair shell and run fsck -y /dev/hda1
which encounters the same IDE reset problems, but eventually corrects the
problems.

Then reboot, things seem to go fine, NO IDE reset errors but I find that I
have no /tmp directory?

Can any one shine some light on this problem?
