network cards that write their EEPROM too easily

A number of Debian users have complained that the device probe routines
in our "generic" kernel cause garbage to be written into the EEPROM of
their NE2000 or WD8013 cards. Can someone tell me about the bit-patterns
used to enable EEPROM write in these devices, and do you know of drivers
that are likely to collide with these cards?

Thanks
