kernel profiling problem - corrupt sampling step?

I'm having some problems doing profiling. kernel 2.0.30

After booting with profile=2 profiling data is available using readprofile
2.0. and looks reasonably OK

readprofile -i reports sampling step of 4.

However after trying to reset the profile counters using readprofile -r
readprofile -i now reports sampling step of 1668572463 and readprofile no
longer reports any profiling data.

eg always prints - 0 total 0.0000

1668572463 = 0x6374652f = "cte/" or lsb first "/etc" - coincidence?

Something seems a bit screwed up in the proc file system, or is it me:):)

Anyone any ideas on how to sort this out? where/what I should look at?

Richard
