Cyclom-Z & kerneld (fwd)

I'm using a Cyclom-Z in a system that is dual boot Slackware / Red Hat,
and it is starting to spend most of its time as Red Hat now. I'm trying
to do things the "Red Hat way" and use modules for most things, but it's
causing some problems with the Z card.

In conf.modules, I have:

alias char-major-19 cyclades
alias char-major-20 cyclades
post-install cyclades /usr/local/sbin/cyzload -f /usr/local/lib/cyzfirm.bin

This almost works. When something tries to access a ttyC port, kerneld
loads the module and runs cyzload, but apparently not fast enough. The
first access always fails with something like:

minicom: cannot open /dev/ttyC1: No such file or directory

A second attempt, before kerneld unloads the cyclades module, will work.
Has anyone else encountered this and solved it...or is linking cyclades.o
into the kernel the only way?

I'm running kernel 2.0.30 and modules 2.0.0-5.
