The kernel sound driver is maintained by the same guy who writes the
commercial version. Understandably, he doesn't really want to put all the
features of the commercial version into one that's freely available.

However, the version in the kernel _is_ free, and there's nothing to stop
somebody else working on it and making it better, except that we then might
lose the current arrangement of having it maintained by Hannu.
