Linux was never meant as a video card detection software and the trivial
detection routines contained in the video code were never reliable and they
caused lots of problems, so I disabled them by default. In case you want the
detection, you can simply flip the CONFIG_VIDEO_SVGA switch in
arch/i386/boot/video.S. Read Documentation/svga.txt for more details.
