Didn't really check this. I'm using a boot-prom with the etherboot-3.1
package, which in turn uses netboot-<something>. I think the latter
parses the bootp responses itself and places the parameters on the
command line.

I did, however, checked out that the kernel's bootp stuff was working
with an older version of the 2.1 series.

etherboot-3.1 makes use of the bootp extension file feature. And that
extension file isn't loaded by the kernel (it would have to do this
with tftp) but contains informations about the root-fs, hostname etc.
