IDE disk drives

Now I know why people swear by scsi...

I have a 6.2 gig Seagate (ST36450A). I put it recently in
a PB with a buggy CMD640 chip.

It worked okay for about a week (but didn't work with another disk,
I used it as the only disk). Then it just went flaky (couldn't boot,
scrubbed the disk clean and then reinstalled (win95 for starters) --
it got to a random part into the install process then complained
about corruption).

I hooked up a linux system on a older hard disk (ide0 was 1.2 seagate, ide1
was 6.2 gig seagate). I repartitioned the drive and ran badblocks and
the system hung after a random amount of time (locked up hard, I had to reboot).
The same thing happened with scandisk /surface off the win95 CD rom.

I had a quantum bigfoot 6.4 gig in a system with a Triton II, I ended up
switching them.

With the seagate in the CMD640, I tried all combinations of bios settings
(setting PIO to 0) without any difference.

When it was in the triton/PPro 200, its working without a problem. The quantum
bigfoot is also working well with the CMD640 based system.

Do some combinations of IDE controllers and drives have these mysterious
problems?
