You have to enable NLS and some other stuff. I just (yesterday) got pre7,
got his patches, patched (had to manually patch at least on one file)
enabled some of the NLS stuff and off it went, working perfectly.

in menuconfig I enabled:

<*> Unicode, native language support x x
<*> NLS Codepage 437
< > NLS Codepage 737
< > NLS Codepage 775
<*> NLS Codepage 850

and

<*> NLS ISO 8859-1

It is possible to get it to work, you just have to tweak a little.
